My ninth FAWM and probably the best one I'll ever do. I like every song on this. Even though all will be scattered to the winds of the various album concepts they were written for, I think it holds together as a cohesive collection in its own right.
There's new stuff for Step Inside, Curtains, Satellites, and Belize, as well as the discovery of post-apocalyptical folk record Left Behind and the country-horror character study Barrow. It was a fertile time for the album cycle.
The new relationship continued, but not without it's struggles. In retrospect, we just had too many core compatibility issues that neither of us wanted to face. For two antisocial indie kids, it's not easy finding someone even remotely compatible, so when you do, it goes a long way in seeing red flags through rosy eyes. It was my first serious entanglement, so it was nice to have anybody care about me. For better or (more likely) worse, we stuck it out.
I started seeing a therapist for the first time to cope with these issues. Should we break up? Is there something wrong with me? Am I broken? All troubling questions I was hoping to hear a resounding 'no' on from my therapist. As beneficial as therapy can be, I definitely went into it in the unhealthiest way possible. Never try to reverse-engineer your own sanity.
I met my drummer Branden Strochinsky in September. He, Nathan, and I started practicing in my basement with a revolving door of bassists. I decided to name the band Soul Phage cause I thought it was a hilarious music pun for the nihilist in all of us. But it was too clever by half and everyone reacted with the same confused expression you're no doubt sporting yourself after hearing it.. Jace once told me "Ya know, maybe not every band name needs to be some high concept pun." But clearly this notion is absurd to me, so we're now called The Odd Ditties.
