The 1st February Album Writing Month (FAWM).
Many of these would go on to contaminate the track listing of Smashy Claw's 2013 nopus Former Spine. As embarrassing as much of this is now, I think it marked a clear shift in quality following the even-more-embarrassing Odd Austin era. Still silly and frivolous, but there's some depth trying desperately to peek out here.
I stopped making "straight" comedy music in 2009 and was navigating the crossroads of an identity crisis, the first of many. Popular song parody, Weird Al wannabedom, and general aimless wackiness was giving me a well-founded imposter syndrome. I wanted to develop a style of my own.
I had started community college down the street from my parent's house a few month's prior. The plan was to get my pre-requisite courses fulfilled at the cheaper campus before applying to a better school for something I actually wanted to be doing. I also started a very intense crash diet. It was a time of great change.
Later in the year, Nathan and I would start working together under that ever ill-fitting JoCo-referential pseudonym to spend the next couple years polishing these fecal specimens into what passed for an album to us back then.
I don't think any of this stands out as "my own style". If anything it merely swapped the Al wannabedom for TMBG or acted as a bridge between the two. That at least was new for me though, so I guess it was a fruitful nail in the coffin of progress.
