about

The Year of the Claw Machine Recovery, but with no sign of slowing down, externally anyway. Even when songs are the cause of my depression, my means of therapy is just more songs. Healthy or not, there's some good stuff in here. This was the year I discovered my 'album cycle'.

Everything I'd released to his point had a thin, muddled concept, if it had one at all. IiR is sorta about mental illness and the nature of repetition, Demons is a hodgepodge of nautical novelties, and the songs on Former Spine are united only by the fact that they're all bad. With the cold water bath realizations afforded me by Claw Machine, I was considering quitting music altogether, at least for a little while there. What kept me hanging in was the notion that each album could serve as a chapter in a greater narrative. I found that idea really exciting. After all, I had a pretty massive backlog to play around with by this time.

I certainly like albums that are merely a collection of what the artist happened to be writing recently, but it wasn't enough for me anymore. With the streaming era making the industry evermore single-minded, I needed a reason for songs to inhabit the same disc space. So I constructed a giant twelve album universe for my characters to thrash around in. It didn't start out as twelve, but like Tolkien said, the tale grew in the telling.

The pre-existing sci-fi-themed Step Inside and death-minded stage play Curtains were figured into the overall plan, but I also discovered a space-rock opera called Satellites, a fake horror movie soundtrack called Belize, and what would become the Backstage trilogy during this FAWM.

The ramifications of Claw Machine didn't just effect my musical direction. We'd really put ourselves out there and had utterly failed. We took such a huge swing that the bat came back around and hit us square in the dick. It scared the shit out of me. So I ran back to the comforting adolescent bosom of college and enrolled in a Masters program.

At the time I thought I needed to get a degree that could give me job security, but with the rearview goggles on, it's clear that it was more a case of "Hmm, I stepped out into the real world and immediately failed. Maybe I'm not good at this 'adult' thing. What was I good at? Am I good at anything? Oh, I was a good student. Let's just do that again."

Hilariously, while succumbing to all this doubt, Needlejuice started. But who possibly could have envisioned what all that would grow into.
