My tenth and final full FAWM. For whatever reason it was important to me to complete a decade of these before I was comfortable ending one without the requisite 14. As you've heard throughout these musings, this obsession was often detrimental to my mental health, as obsessions often are. I haven't done a full one since, so I'm pleased that that particular monkey has fucked all the way up on off my back. Progress was made on Backstage, Curtains, Barrow, and Left Behind, and I found yet another concept cog in the apocalypse origin story Parasites. Also, a mind-numbingly stupid thing where Mario raps that will never appear on anything.
I went through the motions of my Masters program since almost the beginning. I had no passion for what I was studying, but I soldiered on out of some sense of... I don't know, pride? Fear? Boredom? Whatever it may have been, I was relieved to finish the main workload in spring 2019. It took me two more semesters to turn in my thesis, but I did it. So now I had a second expensive piece of paper collecting dust in a box in the closet.
At the ripe age of 27, I moved out of my parent's place and into an apartment with my partner, who moved from the other side of the country to be with me. Though we didn't know it yet, Covid was moving across the country too. I quarantined with her n this small apartment, writing a thesis I didn't want to write, and navigating the ongoing struggles of a wobbly relationship. I wrote Belfry for her.
The band continued practicing in my parent's basement and we had our first drum session for Backstage at Tyler Imbrogno's studio in Denver. As the pandemic lockdowns raged on, we wouldn't play a show until the following year.
